• Artist Statement

My work consists of two roles: “painter” and “caricature artist”. Drawing caricatures forms my foundation as an artist, having compiled well over 10,000 hours of drawing faces since 2000. I approach these drawings with an illustrative, outcome-based approach that visualizes the end in mind and renders toward that end.

The painting aspect of my work departs from this outcome-based approach. With painting I dive into a subject experimentally, quickly developing problems and then trying to resolve them through the editing process. My most recent series highlights this process by reimagining the rapid development of Nashville as work of art. I find myself pondering: "Can the color and energy of growth be a beautiful thing, or do I just anxiously await the removal of all the scaffolding?"
